I used to struggle with a lot of things, and I didn’t think the music I listened to mattered. I’d tell myself, “I just like how it sounds. I’m not even paying attention to the words.” But I started realizing those words were still getting into my head. Sometimes they shaped the way I thought. Hearing songs talk so poorly about women—some of the most sacred people on earth—makes me sad now. It didn’t take one day to change what I listened to. I’m still figuring it out. And it’s not just about cussing. An “explicit” label isn’t my test. I care about the message, and who’s giving it to me. I know one video isn’t going to change everything for you. That’s not how it worked for me either. Just pay attention to what you’re letting in, and take one good step in the right direction at a time. I care about you guys. Being more intentional with music has made me feel better inside, and I really think it’s worth trying.
