FULL CIRCLE 🔁 We caught up with @lelynddarkes during @knownasjael sold-out return to DC to talk about just how full circle this moment really was. Lelynd has been family since before he ever stepped behind the decks, and we’ve had the pleasure of watching him grow, pivot and now take the DJ world by storm. Years ago, he was singing, creating and covering music from JAEL, never knowing that one day he’d be sharing a lineup with him. From covering his music to opening the night for him. Full circle for real. A big part of what we do at Church On Sunday is preserve the history and culture of Black dance music, while also documenting the journeys of the people carrying it forward right now. That same intentionality goes into everything we do. The artists we bring. The DJs we pair together. The stories we choose to tell. None of it is by accident. Let this be a testament to following your dreams, being open to the pivot and letting the process take you places you may have never imagined. If U Here, U Family.

Today makes 34. A couple days ago I shared something that perfectly captures where I am in life. More focused than I’ve ever been. More mature than I’ve ever been. Sober. Celibate. Down 19lbs.. most of that weight was extra baggage I needed to let go! My circle got smaller, I stopped running with a crowd and my conversations with self got deeper. I realized, the only person i’m competing with, is me. How I can be the best version of myself and live up to who I say I am. “Be delusional, but be assertive. Be calculated, but be free”. I started speaking life into myself and I heard myself. That gave me the space to pour into what matters most: my son, my family, my purpose, my business, and my solitude. Evolution is inevitable. What you do when the next chapter comes is your own story to write, your own race to run. How will you finish?! I chose to take it up a notch—mentally, physically, and spiritually. This next chapter is personal. To everyone who’s supported me, thank you. To those who haven’t, thank you too. To the people who’ve been here since day one, and to those just tuning in... Keep your head, to the sky! 💙

Whew, five years of this thing we call Church. Figured it was about time we put into words what this thing of ours is really all about. Not just the music, but the people, culture, history, and spirit behind it all. What started as a little Sunday basement function toward the tail end of COVID has grown into DC’s most special music and cultural experiences. Somewhere along the way, we helped set a blueprint for intentional DJ lineups, real community building, and showing folks just how big things can grow out of small rooms.
