Heart trouble doesn’t always begin with obvious chest pain. Some warning signs of heart problems can be subtle and easy to overlook, including unusual fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest, shortness of breath during simple activities, and unexplained jaw, neck, or back pain. These symptoms don’t automatically mean you’re having a heart attack, but they can sometimes be associated with a heart problem and shouldn’t be ignored — especially when they appear together, are new, severe, or worsening. If your mother has had breast cancer, does that mean you have inherited a high-risk gene? Not necessarily. A family history of breast cancer can affect your risk, but it does not automatically mean the cancer was caused by an inherited BRCA gene change. Your risk assessment may consider your mother’s age at diagnosis, genetic test results, and whether other relatives—on either side of the family—have had breast, ovarian or related cancers.
